Sex on drugs

Sex is the inspiration behinds approximately 97.8% (don’t quote us on that) of music on the radio. It can provide some unforgettable moments between you and your partner. For the most part, it’s a pretty special thing. When you start mixing substances into the equation is when things get hazy. We’re here to give you the dirt on sex and drugs.

A blonde, young woman is sitting down. There is a street behind her. She is considering having sex on drugs. This is a wide-angle image.

Sex on drugs: Common ones

Amphetamines (speed)

  • High: The initial rush may lift the libido, but the feeling is unlikely to last.
  • Low: Those with penises may find it is less sensitive or responsive, and ejaculation difficult to achieve. As a result, sex can last a long time – which places both partners at risk of chafing (rubbed raw skin). Painfully funny on paper. Pure pain, in reality.

Cannabis

  • High: Users can feel less inhibited and more friendly, while the increased perception of sense of touch can turn stoners all touchy-feely.
  • Low: People with penises who are on dope risk a reduction in testosterone production, and a drop in sperm count, while those with ovaries may experience fertility problems due to changes in ovulation and menstrual cycles.

Cocaine

  • High: Cocaine is a stimulant drug. In small doses, sex on coke can be pretty good. It can increase sexual arousal and make orgasms and erections easier. Not to mention the adrenaline rush you get. This can happen if coke is placed in any orifice of the body (although some might be more pleasant than others) as it just needs to be absorbed to get into your bloodstream.
  • Low: In larger amounts, cocaine can still fuel sexual desire, while decreasing the ability to actually perform properly. Problems achieving erection and orgasm are very common – not to mention frustrating. This is a result of your body becoming dependent on coke just to get it on.

Ecstasy/MDMA

  • High: An increased sense of warmth and empathy towards your sexual partner. Some users feel they are more physically aroused, (although others report a loss of sensation and delayed orgasm).
  • Low: It might take you longer to have an orgasm. It’s also important to be aware that Ecstasy/MDMA can make you dehydrated, which could be exacerbated sex, so make sure you sip water regularly. It’s easy to get lost in the moment when you’re feeling loved up on Ecstasy/MDMA, but be careful to always practice safe sex

Sex on drugs: Hallucinogens

Sex on LSD

  • High: Some people report an increased sexual awareness while having sex on LSD.
  • Low: Trips are unpredictable because it is a hallucinogenic drug. Hallucinating unpleasantly during sex could be traumatic, while a heavy dose means a total turn off for the user.

Disclaimer on sex and psychedelics:

Sex on acid, or any psychedelic for that matter, can be a really interesting experience because colours and sensations are more vivid. Since time moves slower, the sex can seem to last for hours. You might even get to play out some of your sexual fantasies. But this is probably the drug we’d add the biggest caution sign to.

Trips on psychedelic drugs vary from moment to moment, you never know if it’s going to be a good one or a bad one. So do it with someone you trust, and the moment you feel like something is wrong, let them know. On top of that, since inhibitions are lowered you’re less likely to practice safe sex.

Sex on drugs: Others

Opiates

  • High: Drugs such as heroin, morphine and codeine belong to a drug group called opiates, which have a painkilling, detached effect. Codeine, in particular, is a feature in some strong over-the-counter painkilling products. Basically, don’t try this for date night, unless you want to kill the mood.
  • Low: Opiate use can lead to full time problems such as impotence, lowered libido and difficulty orgasming.

Poppers (alkyl nitrites)

  • High: Some users take poppers during sex because they enjoy the brief, intense head rush and relaxant effect. It’s actually pretty popular among gay men, because sniffing poppers relaxes the anal sphincter muscles, making anal sex easier
  • Low: Alkyl nitrites reduce blood pressure. This means Viagra users should steer clear because the combination could be fatal.

Sex on drugs is one of many factors to consider before taking any substance. At the end of the day, there is no way of knowing exactly how you’ll react to what you’re taking. We’re just here to give you the most probable scenario, so take that as you will. If you feel like anything is off, make sure to have an open discussion with a trusted person in your life and seek help where necessary.
