Why is there a housing crisis in the UK?
With a pretty straightforward imbalance of supply and demand, prices are pushed up as simply not enough homes are being built to cope with the demand. This has been a long-standing issue that’s contributed to rents going up higher than ever before. Lack of housing supply is also contributing to people living in substandard housing and even homelessness.
Young people are desperate for housing
Housing issues are constantly increasing for under 25s, with under 1% owning their own home, according to a 2022 survey by Statista. The cost of buying a home in the UK, particularly in major cities and desirable areas, has been rising significantly faster than incomes.
Struggling to pay the bills
If you’re struggling to pay the bills, home ownership might seem like an impossible dream, but many young people are in the same situation. High property prices and rising living costs make it difficult to save for a sufficient deposit to buy a home, and many have argued that the ability of those who live in social housing to buy their own homes has only fuelled the current housing crisis.
Social housing shortage
Unsurprisingly, there’s also a social housing shortage, with those who have secured somewhere to live often facing issues with their accommodation that affect their physical and mental health.
