What is anxiety?
Anxiety is a general feeling of unease or worry. Many of us will be familiar with it, in fact it’s a normal emotional state that we all experience. But for those with anxiety disorders, the feeling of intense fear can be overwhelming to the point of making life seem impossible. There are different types of anxiety disorders, including social anxiety and panic disorder, both of which can lead to panic attacks. What is OCD?
OCD, or obsessive compulsive disorder, is one of the most common types of personality disorder. Its symptoms include behaviours like repeatedly checking things or excessive cleaning. Hoarding disorder is also another form of OCD. Many people wonder if they have OCD, and most people will act in a way that could be confused with OCD occasionally, but in cases of actual diagnosed OCD the symptoms are more serious. The causes are varied. It can develop as a side effect of bullying or stress, or can be caused by changes in your brain chemistry.
Coping with phobias
Most people have a phobia or two; spiders, heights and mice are pretty common. Generally, these are nothing to worry about, but for some people, phobias can become overwhelming. Those who have a fear of social situations can find themselves withdrawing from the world. Some people develop agoraphobia after a traumatic event in their life, which can ultimately make it difficult for them to leave the house. Whatever the details of the phobia are, anxiety is usually at the root of it, meaning it is treatable.
Treatment for panic attacks and anxiety
Treating anxiety, panic attacks, phobias and OCD is usually done via therapy. This could include CBT, mindfulness or counselling.
