Working to find work – and staying positive

Many young people across the UK are struggling to find paid work and a huge proportion have taken a financial hit as a result of being unemployed. Lots of young people contact our support services to talk through these issues, and often they have been looking for work for several months or more.

They may have filled a lot of applications, sent out many CVs, had a few interviews but been unable to find paid work. If this sounds like you, it’s important to remember that you’re not alone.

Some of the people we chat with tell us that the whole process of finding a job is causing them to feel isolated, stressed, and even lack confidence. This will often make the situation worse and result in a vicious cycle.

The good news is that although youth unemployment is still prevalent, recent reports show the current situation seems to be improving.

Often the people around you will talk about how difficult it is to find a job, and some may even make the goal seem impossible. Finding your first job may also seem like a full-time job in itself. I personally believe it helps to count every small achievement and try not to lose heart, until your perseverance gets you there. It can also help to take the time to do things you enjoy.

Get Connected is here for you if you do want to talk about how your job search has been going, and/or how you’re feeling emotionally. We can give you a chance to explore your situation before finding further support.

If you wanted to speak with someone to get direct advice and specific information on careers, you can contact The
National Careers Service. You may also find the e-zines available from Youth Employment UK useful.

This post was originally part of the Get Connected website. YouthNet and Get Connected merged to form The Mix in 2016.
